THE POWER OF MOTHERHOOD

FamKitchen

I am currently reading “The Day Christ Died” (The Inspiring Classic on the Last 24 Hours of Jesus’ Life) by Jim Bishop. It’s not a new book. It was printed nearly 70 years ago. I read it when I was a late teen and it impacted me greatly. Recently it came back to my remembrance, and I felt I should read it again.

As is my habit, I don’t start at Chapter one. I first like to read Dedication, the Forward, the Introduction, and even the Bibliography. As I opened this book again, I noticed the Dedication: “This book is dedicated to Jenny Bishop, my mother who taught us to love Him.” What a beautiful dedication.

But then I was blessed again as I read the end of his Introduction called “For the Record.”

“My greatest continuing encouragement came from my mother. This is more than a personal acknowledgement because her stories about Jesus—the omnipotence of Him, the forgiving qualities in Him, the love of Him, and, most especially the fear of Him—began when each of us reached the age of three. She did not stop until the sacrament of marriage took each of us away.”

Wouldn’t you love to have something like that written about you? I would. I noticed the words “continuing encouragement.” She didn’t give up teaching and encouraging her children. IT was continuous through their lives. Did you notice that she “did not stop” revealing Jesus to them until they left the home to be married. She made the most of every moment.

These words are an encouragement to all mothers. It is so easy to let the powerful years of motherhood slip through your fingers. Oh yes, you love your children and yet not be dedicated to motherhood. Other interests or even a career take precedence and the powerful moments and hours of being with children, teaching them, and imparting into their lives are lost. And they can never be regained.

You have your children in your home to influence their lives for such a short time of their lives. Think of maybe only 21 years compared to the 80 plus years or so they will live. You’ve only got this chance. Make the most of it until the day they are married.
