EARTHQUAKES AND HURRICANES!

EarthquakesHurricanes“’The great events of this world,’” says someone, “are not battles and earthquakes and hurricanes. The great events of this world are babies. They are earthquakes and hurricanes.’” . . . Oh, the secrets that lie all about us hidden from our eyes! We glance at a tiny child, and we do not see, we do not know, what a thunderbolt of the Almighty is wrapped up in that little child.”

A GOOD QUESTION

GoodQuestionThe education of our children is a big part of our mothering. It is a responsibility that God has given to us as mothers. It’s not something we can hand over to someone else, unless we know that person is teaching our children a biblical worldview and the understanding of God’s ways for mankind from the Bible. We are responsible to oversee the education of our children from God’s point of view because we are nurturing and educating them on His behalf.

William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, challenges us to ask this question regarding every opportunity of learning for our children: “‘Will this learning help my children to love God more, and to serve their generation better?’ If it seems likely to do so, to quality them more effectually for saving souls, fighting the devil, mastering sin, and following Jesus Christ, secure it for them, if possible.”

He goes on to say that after we have taught our children all that is necessary to carry on the duties of everyday life and business affairs, we should then decide that “they shall learn nothing that cannot really be pressed into the service of God, and used for the salvation of souls.”

Psalm 1:1, 2: “ Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, not sits in the seat of the scornful, But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

Does this picture the education of your children?

ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT

OneGenerationWhat a blessing to partake of the promises of God. Isaiah 51: 8 says: “My righteousness shall be forever: and my salvation from generation to generation.” We notice here again the twins of righteousness and salvation.

But I love the promise that God’s salvation continues from one generation to the next. Claim this for your children, your grandchildren, and the generations to come. Pray not only for your children, but for the generations to come.

Colin’s great grandmother lived in their home when he was a little toddler. He doesn’t remember her, but his mother shares how she was a great intercessor and lived a life of prayer in her older years. She not only prayed for the people around her, but specifically prayed for the coming generations. The family live in the blessing of these prayers and we are now beginning a seventh generation from this godly woman who prayed for her descendants.

This has also inspired Colin and me to pray for the coming generations and we do this when we pray for our children and grandchildren each day.

We have such a merciful God. He says that He visits the iniquity of the children up to the third and fourth generation, but then stops! That is His mercy. But He keeps covenant with those who keep His commandments for a thousand generations! Hallelujah! Read these Scriptures: Exodus 20:5, 6; 34:6, 7; Deuteronomy 7:9, 10; 1 Chronicles 16:1`5; and Psalm 105:8.

What a responsibility we have as parents to keep God’s commandments and walk in His ways. We pave the way for God’s blessings to a thousand generations.

Proverbs 20:7: “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.”

Psalm 25:12, 13: “What man is he that feareth the LORD? . . . his seed shall inherit the earth.”

Psalm 112:1, 2: “Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.”

May you and your family be blessed today,

Nancy Campbell

FOLLOW PASSIONATELY

FollowPassionatelyWe mostly receive one baby at a time, but sometimes two! I was blessed to have twins many years ago and I used to say: “There’s only one thing better than having a baby and that’s having two babies!” We also read about twins in the Bible; not only physical twins, but character twins. It’s fun to look out for them. You will have already noticed “faith and love,” “grace and truth,” and “prayer and thanksgiving.”

Another set of twins you will notice over and over again is “salvation and righteousness.” They are inseparable (Isaiah 46:13; 51:5, 6, 8; 56:1; Romans 1:16, 17; 10:10). When we are saved, we are saved to righteousness. The scepter of God’s kingdom is a scepter of righteousness (Hebrews 1:8, 9). He holds out His scepter of salvation and righteousness to us. When we accept, we enter into a kingdom of righteousness. When we accept Christ as our Savior, we also accept Him as our righteousness. If we don’t want righteousness, we don’t want salvation.

Matthew 5:6 says: “Blessed are they which do HUNGER AND THIRST after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

Matthew 6:33 says: “Seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God and his righteousness.”

I am challenged by Isaiah 51:1: “Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD.” The Hebrew word “follow” is “radaph" and means “to run after, chase, hunt, pursue.” It is not a complacent word. It’s an intensely active word. It’s not moderate action, but that which takes all our strength, sweat, and exertion.

We are to follow after righteousness ardently, avidly, devoutly, diligently, eagerly, earnestly, exceedingly, fervently, intensely, passionately, perseveringly, persistently, powerfully, relentlessly, steadfastly, strenuously, strongly, unfalteringly, untiringly, vehemently, vigilantly, vigorously, wholeheartedly, willingly, and zealously! It’s the same word used of soldiers chasing down their enemy until they are destroyed, even when they are tired. “Faint, yet pursuing” (Judges 8:4).

What is the standard for righteousness in our homes? Does our desire for righteousness influence our children? Does it make them want to pursue righteousness? They will not be turned on if all they see is religion and legalism. But when they see our hearts hot and passionate for God because we are in love with Christ who is our Righteousness, they will want to live in the joy of His kingdom too.

Yes, righteousness begets joy. Hebrews 1:9 tells us that because Jesus “loved righteousness, and hated iniquity, therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”

You cannot separate salvation and righteousness. Christ came to save us from sin and give us His righteousness. Seek to be a family who all PASSIONATELY FOLLOW after righteousness (Hebrews 12:14).

Be encouraged today,

Nancy Campbell

THE BEAUTIFUL LIFESTYLE

BeautifulLifestyleWe all know the Titus 2:3-5 passage in the Bible where the older women are instructed to be “teachers of good things.” The Mirror paraphrase of the Bible says that it is “irresistibly beautiful teaching.” The phrase in the Greek is “kalodidaskalos” from two words:
1.”didaskalos” meaning “ teacher, instructor,” and
2. “kalos” meaning “good, beautiful.”

Actually it is more than that. Would you like to know the full meaning of this word? Sorry, there are too many descriptions from the Greek Lexicon so I’ll just add a few more for you: “kalos” also means “excellent in its nature and characteristics, magnificent, surpassing, precious, useful, suitable, commendable, admirable, valuable, virtuous, worthy, praiseworthy, honorable, beautiful to look at, and beautiful by reason of purity of heart and life.”

God describes the lifestyle of being a submissive and loving wife, mothering (embracing and loving children), and keeping the home as beautiful and admirable. They are not insignificant or to be despised. This lifestyle is so valuable to God and to society that God actually says that when we reject it we “blaspheme the Word of God.” Please don’t get mad at me! I didn’t say those words, the Bible says them!

I like the J. B. Phillip’s translation of these words. Instead of saying them in the negative, he turns them around to the positive and says that when young women embrace this beautiful lifestyle it is “a good advertisement for the Christian faith.”

It’s the same word that is used in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good (kalos) works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Embrace your beautiful lifestyle today, dear wives and mothers. It is beautiful to God. It is precious to our husbands. It is valuable for our children. And it is magnificent for the blessing of society.

GARDENS ARE PRECIOUS

GardensPreciousIsn’t it amazing how you miss things in God’s Word? It is so rich and full and every day you see something new. It was already there but you hadn’t noticed it before. Reading James 5:7 I noticed the words, “Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth.”

I was amazed to notice that God calls the harvest of the garden the “PRECIOUS fruit of the earth.” It is not something to take lightly or be despised. The Greek word for “precious” is “timios” and means “honorable, beloved, esteemed, and valuable.” It is exactly the same word that is used when it talks of about “marriage which is honorable,” “the trial of our faith which is more precious than gold,” the new Jerusalem descending out of heaven and the light is like a stone most precious,” the foundations of the new Jerusalem which are built with precious stones,” the exceeding, great, and precious promises of God’s Word,” and the most precious of all--“the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”

And God uses the same word for our gardens! God comes down to our world. His Word is not only spiritual, but practical. Gardens are gifts from God. They are provision from God. I am so aware of this as I plant my garden. All I do is prepare my soil and plant the seeds (and of course I have to weed and water), and then I watch God work. I see God-miracles every day as these seeds become little green shoots appearing out of the earth and then grow to big plants and then bring forth a harvest of food for us and many people. It is very precious. And it is all the work of God. Thank you, Father.

We can often forget the reality of God’s provision when we are used to going to the supermarket to purchase our fruit and vegetables. We can buy any variety from any country at any season of the year! Forget planting a garden! But can we really? Even the organic vegetables, which are usually too expensive to purchase, often look wilted and you wonder how long they have been sitting in the shop--losing vitamins and nutrients each day.

I love to go to my garden and pick my salad for lunch. I then go out again at supper time and pick ;my harvest to prepare for my evening meal. Everything is so fresh and lush. And not only is it so much healthier, but it is God-commanded. The very first task God gave Adam and Eve was to work in the garden He created for them (Genesis 2:15).

When the people of Judah were taken to Babylon as captives, the prophet Jeremiah brought the word of the Lord to them. Actually, from “the Lord of Hosts,” the God of the armies of Heaven! What great word would he give to His people, taken from their beloved homeland and now living in a materialistic, deceived, and ungodly country?

He reminds them of seven things, principles He gave them in the very beginning of time. And now He says: I want you to keep doing them. Yes, I know you are in captivity, but I don’t change my plans. Keep doing them no matter where you are or what your circumstances.

This post is getting too long to tell you all of them but the first two were: “Build houses, and dwell in them; and PLANT GARDENS, and eat the fruit of them” (Jeremiah 29:4, 5).

Why? Because they are God’s idea. They are God’s provision. And they are PRECIOUS!

A HIGHER VISION

HigherVisionThere’s more to motherhood than feeding and clothing our children, isn’t there? It’s not hard to do that even if you are holding down another job. However, there is far more! It’s not enough to care for their bodies; it is even more important to care for their souls and spirits. I not only want our children and grandchildren (and great-grandchildren) to grow up to be good citizens--I have a greater vision.

I want children who love God above all else.
I want children who are growing into the likeness of Christ.
I want children who love righteousness and abhor evil.
I want children who have a biblical mindset and stand for God’s truth.
I want children who will not compromise godly standards.
I want children who will not be tainted by the spirit of this world.
I want children who will not give in to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, but who will pursue the will of God.
I want children who love God’s Word and love to pray.
I want children who will blaze across this world with the gospel and message of truth.
Amen.

I am sure this is your longing and prayer too.

Bless you today, Nancy Campbell

IN YOUR HOME--RIGHT NOW!

InHomeNowIn our family we read THE DAILY LIGHT at our morning and evening devotions. We love it because it is only the Word of God, Scriptures put together on a particular subject. Did anyone else read it this morning? Wow, what convicting Scriptures. In this short reading I counted 21 attributes of God which He wants us to manifest in our daily lives. I’ll list them for you--full of mercy, graciousness, longsuffering, abundant in goodness, abundant in truth, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering, forbearing one another in love, kindness, tenderheartedness, forgiveness, purity, peaceableness, gentleness, easy to be entreated, full of good fruits, patience, love and all without partiality and without hypocrisy!

It is impossible for us to work these beautiful attributes up in our own flesh. They come from God. They are the life of Christ. But the amazing truth is that He dwells within us by His Spirit. Therefore, these attributes also belong to us. We are often (I am anyway) of being guilty of not living in the fullness of the redemption Jesus Christ wrought for us upon the cross. He not only died to save us from our sins, but rose again to dwell within us and fill us with His life. He wants to live His life through us. He wants to manifest these beautiful attributes through us.

God’s grace gives us eternal salvation, but God’s grace also enables us live in the power of God right here on earth. Titus 2:11,12 tells us that God’s grace enables us to live “soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.” Not the next world, but this present world! Right in your home. Right in your kitchen when children are screaming, the baby needs you, and everything needs to be done at once and you don’t know where to turn! God’s grace is available for you right now. His godly life, filled with patience, longsuffering, forgiveness, and gentleness is within you now.

Embrace the truth. Thank God for His life within you. Accept it by faith and walk in it. Don’t wallow in your self-pity, but live in the fullness of the life of Christ who dwells within you. This is your victory. This is your glory--CHRIST IN YOU!

May God save us from denying the power of the cross of Jesus Christ and living defeated lives when He wants to live His victorious life in us--in the midst of whatever we face right now!

Be blessed,

Nancy Campbell

THE DAILY LIGHT
I mentioned this devotional book in my post above. We particularly love it because it only has God’s Word. The more of God’s Word we can get into our children the better! One of the great advantages of this devotional is that it provides prepared Scriptures on a certain theme for EVERY MORNING AND EVERY EVENING OF THE YEAR! You don’t have to wonder where to read in the Bible. All you do is turn to the date and it’s all there for you! A marvelous blessing for husbands who don’t feel confident about leading devotions--it’s all prepared for them!

LOOK BEYOND TODAY

LookBeyondOur power and influence as mothers, not only affects the destiny of the nation, but future generations. It is easy to get bogged down with the grind of daily activities in the home, isn't it? There can be times when you feel you are stuck in the mire with no hope of accomplishing anything. But dear Mother, you are not only training children for today, but for the future.

Begin to see your mothering in the light of future generations. As you mother your children, you are also affecting grandchildren and great-grandchildren to come. You are a generational mother!

Rev. Edward Taylor Sullivan spoke these words in a sermon: “I walked down the furrow in the field,” said a humble mother who lived on a New Hampshire farm; “I walked down the furrow with the Governor of New Hampshire in my arms, and the Governor of Massachusetts clinging to my skirts.” She said that afterwards, long afterwards, in her old age. For she knew not then, and no one knew, that her two baby boys would be governors of two New England states.”

I love the words of this song, written by a friend of mine:
“Mothers of children, can you not see
The world of tomorrow asleep on your knee?”

You cannot even dream what God has ahead for your children as you are faithful to nurture and train them in God’s ways and His Word of truth. Psalm 22:30, 31 (NLT) says: “Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord. His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born. They will hear about everything he has done.”

NO ONE CAN REPLACE YOU

NoReplacementGod says that godly mothers are worth more than precious jewels. Some time ago an Above Rubies reader wrote to me:

"When we were getting life insurance, I was taken aback at my husband's view of my monetary value. He said if I died he would have to hire a maid, a gardener, a cook, umpteen babysitters, private tutors, a tailor, etc., and he would still be without his best friend."

LOVE WARNS

LoveWarnsYesterday we talked about being the Watchmothers of our homes. However, there is more to being a “watchman” than guarding your home. We are also responsible to teach and give warning.

God said to Ezekiel: “Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor SPEAKEST TO WARN the wicked from his wicked way, TO SAVE HIS LIFE; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but HIS BLOOD WILL I REQUIRE AT THINE HAND . . ." (Ezekiel 3:18-21 and 33:7-9).

This is a scary Scripture to give you as mothers, but yes, it does apply to us. We have a responsibility to teach our children God’s ways and also to warn them when they walk down a wrong path. It is sad that some parents do not want to confront their children (or teenagers) or deal too harshly with them in case the reject them or don’t like them any more. They would rather let them go on in their sin and wayward path. This is not faithful parenting.

God holds us responsible as parents to give life-giving counsel to our children even if they don’t like it or take heed to it. Do you notice that the Scripture says that we give it "TO SAVE THEIR LIVES"! Yes, their lives here on earth, but more importantly, their eternal destiny!

God’s grace is always abundant and free when there is repentance, but when our children walk in disobedience and away from God’s path, it is time for warning. Paul picks up the words of Ezekiel in Acts 20:26-28 when he says: “Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am PURE FROM THE BLOOD OF ALL MEN. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.”

Paul wrote to the believers to WARN them (Acts 20:31; 1 Corinthians 4:14; Colossians 1:28; 3:16; 1 Thessalonians 4:6; 5:12, 14; and 2 Thessalonians 3:15).

Dear Mother, this is part of your being a watchman. Be faithful to your task. Their blood is upon your hands if you are not faithful to teach them the whole counsel of God in order to save their lives for this life and for eternity.

Be blessed,

Nancy Campbell

LET’S GET THE TRUE PICTURE

TruePictureI sometimes hear women use Proverbs 31 as an excuse to be career women. They say that this woman was in real estate because verse 16 says: “She considers a field, and buys it.” To purchase land to plant a vineyard is not the same thing as being in a full-time career. Vineyards were part of home life in Israel. They were part of their survival. As this family grew, they needed land to plant another vineyard and so she needed to check out the most suitable land. It is still the lifestyle in Israel and European countries today. When ministering in different countries in Europe Colin and I have stayed with a number of families who own their own vineyards nearby to their homes.

It’s much the same as going out look for land or a new house for your family. I am sure you have done this. This is part of caring for your family, not a career outside the home!

Once this virtuous woman found the land for another vineyard to help feed their family, she didn’t continue to go out each day and buy and sell land for other families. This was part of her watching over the affairs of her family. This is the whole theme of Proverbs 31. It reveals an industrious woman in her home, watching over it from morning until night.

Verse 27 says: “She looks well to the ways of her household.” The words “looks well” is the Hebrew word “tsaphah” and is the same word that is used of “watchmen” in the Bible. It describes the Proverbs 31 woman as a watchwoman over her home--hardworking and productive, guarding her home and her children, keeping watch on everything that happens. Nothing is hidden from her eyes.

It is impossible to be a watchman (a watchwoman) if you are not in the home. A watchman or guard stood at his post. He could not vacate his post while he was on duty. He had to be faithful to guard the city and watch out for enemies lurking around.

God told Ezekiel in Ezekiel 3:17: “Son of man, I have made thee a watchman (“tsaphah” same as “looks well”) unto the house of Israel.” In the same way, God makes each mother a watchman over her home and the children He gives to her. We cannot take our career of Watchmother lightly. We better not vacate our post.

Many blessings to you today from Nancy Campbell

THEY’RE WATCHING YOU!

WatchingYouTwo bright EYES are watching you, Mother and Dad,
They’re watching you all the day long,
Absorbing unconsciously all that you are,
Not dreaming that you could be wrong.

Two quick EARS are listening to all that you say,
They’re listening to you, Mother and Dad.
Then speak of the things that are lovely and true,
For some day you will wish that you had.

Two swift little FEET follow you all of the day,
They step in the footprints you make.
If you follow God’s paths, they’ll walk there too,
Or stray if His ways you forsake.

Two soft little HANDS have been placed into yours,
They’re trustfully clinging to you.
Today, while they’re pliable, train them aright,
They’ll do what you teach them to do.

A warm little HEART beats to music you make,
To your life notes of love or of hate,
It swings to the rhythm of your life all day,
Do not let it hear love notes too late.

MISPLACED!

MisplacedIn Ezekiel chapter 19 we read an allegory. God talks about the tribe of Judah and likens her to a mother. As we read this passage, we understand God’s value of motherhood.

Ezekiel 19:10, 11: “Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters. And she had strong rods for the scepters of them that bare rule, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches.” The Hebrew word for “exalted” is gabah and means “to soar, to mount up, to lift up, to raise up to great height.”

God has exalted motherhood. He has placed it high in society. It is higher than all other careers. It is manifold and involves so many different areas.

Sadly, this allegory in Ezekiel 19:12-14 ends on a bitter note. “But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; and the fire consumed them. And now she is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty ground. And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod to be a scepter to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.”

This passage is an up-to-date picture of motherhood in our society today. God exalted motherhood to a high place. He placed mothers in the home to enjoy fruitfulness and protection. But (notice the “but” in the above Scripture) angry hands came along, plucked them out of the home, and planted them in a wilderness. The wilderness in this passage literally speaks of Babylon, which is a type of confusion and deception.

This is where many mothers are planted today. They are misplaced! God intends for them to be in the home, but often they are away from their children whom God gave them to care for. Their wombs are “dried up” (v.12), because they no longer have time to have children. The children they do have are “devoured” (v. 14) by the enemy because they have vacated their post. They are not home to care for them. They have, often ignorantly, been sucked into the sly strategy of the enemy of our souls who wants to rob children of their mothers and mothers of their children.

Satan knows that if he can get mothers out of the home, he can get his hands upon the children and consequently steer the course of the nation. He is terrified of mothers who understand their divine calling and who will not be pushed out of the home, no matter what the situation. He is scared of mothers who are prepared to sacrifice many material things so they can stay home with their children.

Blessings from Nancy Campbell
