Today I continue the theme of how many in our modern society are letting go necessary and godly traditions. This one is basic and very practical and yet missing in so many families today. It is the family tradition of sitting together around the table for mealtimes. We must not let this go.

Like many things, you must hold on to it tightly. The pressures and busyness of life can crowd in upon us, but we must not be moved. We must hold it fast.

Revelation 2:25 says: “That which ye have already, hold fast till I come.”

Revelation 3:11 says: “Hold fast that which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.”

This is not a man-made tradition. It is a biblical ritual. When God gives His plan of family life in Psalm 128:3 He shows the family all siting around the table.

“Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the very heart of your house, your children like olive plants ALL AROUND YOUR TABLE.”

The table is a gathering place. In fact it’s the easiest place to gather your children because you have food. Everyone wants food! Especially if it looks attractive and smells wonderful. It’s a place to bind as a family. To discuss and dialogue together. It’s the best place to have your Bible reading and prayer at the end of the meal while you are all still together. It’s a place where you feed your family body, soul, and spirit.

I know there are many challenges as you train your little ones to sit at the table. It takes training for children to SIT at the table, but you train them little by little. Don’t give up.

You also face challenges as your children grow older and get involved in many activities. This is where you must make priorities in your home to make the best things happen. Many things ae good but not always the best. You are certainly not choosing the best when the family meal table is laid aside for other things.

Keep this godly practice going in your home. Don’t let it go. Hold it fast.

Mother, you are the one to make it happen.
