The following are 25 questions it is good to ask ourselves before making important decisions or judgments:
1. Do I press for something good at the expense of the excellent?
(Romans 12:1-2 and Philippians 1:10).
2. Do I regard myself as superior to others?
(John 13:4 and Romans 12:3).
3. Do I regard myself as infallible? (Proverbs 26:12).
4. Am I respecter of persons?
(Deuteronomy 1:17 and James 2:1-6).
5. Am I unbelieving?
(Psalm 78:19-22; Mark 6:6; 16:14; Hebrews 3:12; and 3:19).
6. Am I impulsive (pushy, impatient, or presumptive)?
(Numbers 14:44 and Psalm 32:9).
7. Am I teachable (open to light from others)?
The Psalmist prayed:
Psalm 25:4: “Teach me your paths.”
Psalm 25:5: “Teach me your truth.”
Psalm 25:9: “Teach me humility.”
Psalm 119:66,108: “Teach me good judgment and knowledge.”
Psalm 119:12: “Teach me your statutes.” (also 12, 6, 64, 68, 124 and 135).
Psalm 143:10: “Teach me your will.”
8. Do I think the matter through, considering all points?
(Luke 14:28).
9. Am I biased or prejudiced? (Psalm 78:57).
10. Do I side with the most popular point of view and the current
trends of society rather than the living Word of God?
(1 Kings 22:12-28 and Isaiah 55:8, 9).
11. Do I consider the other person’s point of view?
(Proverbs 11:14 and Philippians 2:3, 4).
12. Am I reactive or prickly? (Proverbs 16:32 and 19:11).
14. Am I dogmatic? (Proverbs 15:32 and James 3:17).
15. Do I consider the other person’s feelings? (Proverbs 13:19).
16. Do I say, “God told me!” Did He really? (Ezekiel 13:7).
17. Am I intolerant of the weakness of others? (Romans 15:1).
18. Am I judgmental and legalistic? (Romans 14:4, 10, 14).
19. Am I too liberal? (Matthew 15:9).
20. Do I want to have the last word?
(Proverbs 29:23; Jams 4:6; and 1 Peter 5:5, 6).
21. Am I apathetic and leave most decisions for others to make? This is immature, wimpy, not manly and in itself a weak decision.
(1 Corinthians 16:13).
22. When I leave others to make decisions and they turn out wrong,
am I the first to criticize them? (Ephesians 4:32).
23. Do I consider the Scriptures to see if there are any biblical
references to the decisions I need to make?
(Isaiah 50:4 and John 5:39).
24. Do I welcome the witness of the Spirit of other mature Christians? (Proverbs 11:14).
25. Do I like to have the knowledge of things but lack the will or discipline to actually put the knowledge to practical experience?
(James 1:22).
