“The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only – and that is to support the ultimate career. ” ― C.S. Lewis.
I especially enjoy that this quote is spoken from a male perspective. Being a homemaker truly is the ultimate career, the ultimate adventure, the ultimate lifestyle, the ultimate experience. Embrace it for all of its wonderfulness!
Even if you are not presently a homemaker full time, it is still your most ultimate career, above any other one. It may rarely offer an actual paycheque, as other careers may, but the eternal rewards, and even the earthly joys, are immeasurable!
I just love my ultimate career!
Love Michelle

Thank you for this quote and blog post Michelle. I truly enjoyed it and couldn’t help but smile! It is my hope to become a stay at home mom/homemaker one day too.
God bless you for recieving this amazing high calling and for encouraging other women to embrace it!
Interestingly, Lewis didn’t marry until mid-life and if I am not mistaken he never had biological children. I am most curious what book this quote is pulled from and the context also. I am not convinced that your interpretation is exactly what Lewis was getting at. I would need more information and even then, since he is dead and we can’t ask him to clarify, we could only guess. If it gives you pride in your “career” as a homemaker, cheers. Now, given my perspective I find myself speculating that he means the “ultimate career” as in Christ’s work of fullfilling God’s law of love, the new covenant, in our lives and evangelizing the good news and how every other career seeks to, or should ideally, seek to do that “ultimate” task also.
